This summer, Shadi Bavar worked with Dr. Bing Ouyang and graduate student Yanjun Li (Leo) on materials research for the development of an underwater inflatable co-prime sonar array (UICSA), an underwater object detection system. The objective of this project is to build a hydrophone array which begins as a compact package and then, arriving at its subsea destination, inflates into a long rigid beam holding the sensors. Shadi investigated a range of water-expanding materials in search of an electricity-independent method of deploying the device and focused on one specific moisture-activated expanding foam. With its end use in mind, she ran a range of tests with the material to determine its characteristics and behaviors and received promising results. Her findings lay the groundwork for the future construction of a foam-inflated UICSA prototype.
